Indjo tuyende!
To Twyfelfontein, 5th of April 2024 – We have our last breakfast in Swakopmund, the Ocean mist is still covering the town. Our waiter is happy when we enter the room with ‘uri nawa’ (how are you?) and takes paper and pencil to enhance our knowledge of Otjiherero. Muapendu ka (good mornig) and karee nawa (goodbye) roll off our mouths smoothly. We walk out to our car. Indjo tuyende! (Let’s go).
Outside, we chat with a bearded South African, who wants to take a picture of our Isuzu. ‘They don’t sell them in South-Africa,’ is his explanation. Strange experience, a David star dangles on his chest, and he wears a shirt with the Israeli flag on both sleeves. We hit the road, pass Hentiesbaai, where we have a taste of the famous Skeleton Coast further up North. A shipwreck lies abandoned in the waves. Poor people try to sell stones and bracelets to the accidental tourists taking pictures. Jeroen buys some for his cabinet of curiosities back home.
